Releasing my inner geek!

Just kidding, I do not think I am that big a geek. But I have my moments.

Anyway, my friends and I recently ordered a bunch of stuff from thinkgeek.com! I was super excited when the package arrived this morning because I have been wanting to get ahold of my…. LIGHTSABER CHOPSTICKS! I have been wanting these forever (well, a while anyway) but it took me a while to find them. I also got a lightsaber laser pointer, because you never know when that may come in handy.
It annoys me how my friend got a watch on the site for like $15 and my chopsticks were $13. But oh well! I will feel like Jedi while I eat dinner every night! Another complaint? Shipping fees to Canada. It always costs so dang much.

Extreme monkey-powered awesomeness enclosed šŸ™‚

Goodies ^.^

Lightsaber chopsticks!!!!!!

Since we are on the topic, HBO released another Game of Thrones teaser! Cannot wait! My friends and I were thinking of doing a themed night for the premier! šŸ™‚ I am currently on the fourth book and I am so slow… One of my new year’s resolutions was to stop feeling so guilty every time I pick up a novel instead of a textbook, and I have been doing pretty well. But it is still very hard to squeeze out time for reading. 😦 It also does not help that A Feast for Crows lackĀ a lot of the characters I am used to from the previous books. But then again we get to see what is going on in Sunspear!

Moving on to a slightly less cheery note….
So the past few weeks has been pretty good work load wise, but I am NOT looking forward to the next two-three weeks. I am swamped with midterms, term papers and presentations! I found out I will be having my macro economics midterm, Chinese midterm and an in-class english essay all one the same day. Wonderful. But I have to say, this is already significantly better than last term. If only I have the self control and motivation to actually get my butt to work and start doing everything now I know my life will be a lot better off when the time comes. Sadly, I work best under pressure and although I am expecting stress, it just is not close enough yet to kick me into hyper work mode! I got to look into that and find ways to see how I can get over that whole only-working-under-pressure thing.

Ending this post off, has anyone SEEN the weather in Vancouver? It is beautiful! Not too cold, not too hot– in other words, perfect! So excited for spring!

Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away! We serve hot Coke.

I think a good way to get over depression is to laugh about it. Oh the irony. But anyway, I am in no way in actual depression, at least not yet. Last term things were a lot rougher. Anyway, I am a bit worried about where everything is headed. Again, I still do not really know what I want to do in my lifeĀ future. As I typed that sentence, I realized I do not even know which road I am going to take in the near future… much less my life.

You know how in movies, the main character goes away to a far off country and there she finds herself. She then goes back home a changed person, with dreams, goals and direction. I have been contemplating going away for an exchange (even before getting into UBC I believe), since our faculty offers that option. I have not looked into the details of it, but from what I know, you can continue earning your credits while you are in your country of choice.

When I was still in high school I always wanted to choose Hong Kong as my exchange site because I have wanted to go to university there as well. My family also has an apartment there, so residence is taken care of. I will see all my old friends and family once again and things will be as they were, even if it is just for the duration of the exchange. But now that I feel lost, I feel pretty dumb for wanting to go to Hong Kong. I have already seen most of what Hong Kong has to offer and what I need are new experiences and something to (hopefully) open my eyes to a path I want to take and pursue. But where do I want to go? I am thinking somewhere in Europe, since I have had the least connections there. It will definitely be new, but seems so clichƩ. Everyone wants to go to Europe (unless if you are in/from Europe). Thinking about wanting to leave and find a dream seems like a thing out of a movie and as most movies are, I fear it is probably easier seen than done.

So how has my term been so far? First of all, I am not getting a gist of what the rest of the term will mostly likely be like just yet because I have only had a week of school. Believe me, it feels like it has been months, but somehow, it has only been a little more than a week. I can already feel the pressure of getting readings done on time. Reading one chapter of psychology takes me at least three hours on a good day. Reading ten chapters of A Storm of Swords (George R.R. Martin) takes a maximum of one hour. Probably less. Story of my life.

Asides from academic side of things, this week I went to the International Business Club: World Cities Night event! As always, it was fun to dress up. There were motivating and informative speeches made by keynote speakers, then some mingling and networking, all done in the quaint little restaurant Salam Bombay. The first speaker talked about the importance of self branding. It served as a really good reminder that whatever you decide to post online stays with you forever. Our speaker even went to quote Google’s CEO, saying that the young will have to change names to escape their cyber past, then moving on to joke that plastic surgery may be necessary with today’s face recognition technology. Scary, but very probable. So remember: whatever you post online can (and will, under certain circumstances) be linked back to you. Of course, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Your achievements may just as well be searched up!

World Cities Night! Have no idea what I was saying here...(credit)

We also got to meet Chris Chong, owner of Vancouver’s very own Butterbooth! It has always been fun, playing around in the photo booth at certain UBC events and what really caught my attention during the speech was how the business has expanded to Hong Kong! Being from Hong Kong, I can imagine all the difficulties that would have occurred with the expansion, and I really wanted to ask Chris more questions…sadly, there was only one of Chris, and loads of inquisitive people! Maybe another time!

The IB club basically took up the whole of Salam Bombay. I have never been to Salam Bombay on Burrard Street, but frequently to Shabusen (for All-you-can-eat sushi!), whose entrance is right across from it. The food was delicious and a new to me and I got a sample a variety of Indian cuisine. Yum! I was pretty full by the end of the night– always a good sign!

Bottomless Indian food! *drools* (credit)

The second weekend of my new term has begun! And you know what weekends mean…time to catch up on readings! The joys of university. šŸ™‚

P.S: Okay, this is pretty random, but because I was really cold today and wanted to warm up, I went to look for something to drink. I really wanted a can of Coke, but it was cold because all our Cokes are in the fridge. So I decided to pour out the Coke into a cup and heated it up in the microwave. After taking it out, I added some lemon juice into it. I just want to say…best idea every for a cold day! It was super fizzy (not sure why though), warm (hot actually) and just nice overall! Hot coke for the win šŸ™‚ Do not judge me.

A new year, a new term…hopefully no oncoming apocalypse?

So, as my second term in University begins, I guess this will be one of my last blog posts for a while! I remember last term when I desperately wanted to blog, but could not find time. I now understand I will probably have to sacrifice some things while concentrating on my studies. Those of you who knew me know what I was going through and it was effort enough to get to school without bursting into tears… great prospects for term 2.

Anyway, the new year has come and gone and I have made some resolutions. Hopefully I will keep them. Despite the possibility of that being low, it is still nice to have something to aim for! So here they are:

1) Take up reading again
Last term, another thing I sacrificed was reading. I love reading–always have, always will. I want to fit reading back into my life. Not forcefully of course, but I want myself to not feel so guilty when I sacrifice some time towards reading. Time will tell if I actually find it possible to find time for it though! Still have not lived through my timetable, so I do not know how hectic this school term will get!

2) Stop cussing like a sailor
Okay, I do not swear that much, but I can do better. I always hate it when I hear people talking and it seems like swear words has become a part of their everyday vocabulary. Is there really no other words you can find to describe whatever you are talking about?? So since it pisses me off so much, I think I should tone down my swearing as well. Maybe just noticing when I cuss will suffice for this resolution because I feel like I do not do it that often. šŸ™‚

3) New Experiences
I usually am very skeptical when it comes to trying new things. I want myself to give things a chance before I say no. I know this is a vague resolution so I will have to work on how I will keep this in check!

4) Healthy Shiatzu
Link to what I mean when I say Shiatzu (please refer to no. 2)Ā Haha! It is just that some of my friends asked me what that even means…
Anyway, I want to be a bit more healthy. But then again, this is probably one of my resolutions every year and look where it has gotten me… I just came back from all-you-can-eat at Fish on Rice. Followed by a not-very-healthy dose of frozen yogurt with loads of toppings.

One of my proudest achievements this winter vacation has been watching a lot of new movies. And by new movies, I mean movies that I have never watched before because they were all made before I was born. Watching them has been fascinating and I found it amazing what directors and producers managed to create with the limited technology and materials they had! Of course, my favourite film out of all the ones I watched had to be Star Wars. I also watched all the Indiana Jones movies. Okay, fine I watched a bunch of Harrison Ford movies okay? Yeah. But I am glad my obsession has lead me to discover so much more! This is like discovering and watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s all over again! Except I actually had time to find and watch more movies instead of just marvelling at one.
The more old movies I watched, the more I honestly feel like I was born in the wrong time. Of course, I should count my lucky stars as I live in a generation that did/does not have to worry about wars…well in a country that did not have to anyway. And there is also all this wonderful technology around me. But when I get absorbed in the movies, it all just blurs and makes me wish I can go back. I will not lie, I really do not have a huge appreciation for our modern entertainment…but do not get me wrong, there’s still plenty of talent. Just that it feels like talent back then was more raw and original? Yeah, something like that. You know there’s something going on in society when books like this exist
Anyway, it has been an enlightening break and I hope everyone is off to a great start this year! I really hope I can squeeze in blogging because I really do love it! But for now, I guess it is good-bye! Wish me luck on my new term!

Contingent Contemplation: Re-watching Star Wars

Ever feel like you were born too late?

Yes, I am talking about me not being able to feel all the hype that surrounded Star Wars way back then. Okay, maybe it was not too long ago, and there were more recent Star Wars films released, but what I am emphasizing on is the ones from the 1980s. I have watched these with my parents when I was younger, but re-watching them again this winter break made it clear to me: They are gold. Seriously, I am addicted and really sad that I cannot be there to get excited about its original release. Looking around, there is still lots of pieces of the Star Wars legacy that exist around me, but it is not the same. I really wish I could have been there.

So, moving on from what I cannot change, watching Star Wars again made me fall in love with Han Solo. With all movies, I usually fall in love with some actor or character and it happens that this time it is Han Solo. I thought I would like Luke more because he was one of the only characters I remembered from watching Star Wars all those years ago. However, Solo is just such a charming character (not to mention a badass) and I loved his relationship with Princess Leia. Again, too bad I cannot find many Han Solo fans around my age anywhere close by because I would definitely be rambling about him all day. Just like I do with a million other actors, such as Shia LaBeouf to name one. And of course, that is my segue into a slightly related topic. I also re-watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just so I can see Harrison Ford. I have never paid much attention to him as my eyes are usually on Shia LaBeouf, but this time I kept my eyes glued on Harrison Ford. Amazingly (or not), I still see a lot of his Han Solo days in him and that delighted me lots. However, I still wish I could be a adoring fan girl who was obsessing over a 30 year old Harrison Ford. Being 18, I feel more appropriate obsessing over Han Solo instead of the current Harrison Ford.

I vaguely remember watching most of the Star Wars movies in my past but not enough to remember what it was really about, so it all seem a bit new to me. I did watch Star Wars in the way it is supposed to be seen (according to most people– and I definitely agree): IV, V, VI then I, II, III. Before starting my marathon, I honestly believed I would like the prequel a lot more because I was more used to modern films. However, after watching the fourth to the sixth ones, I was beginning to wonder if the prequel can live up to it. It did not in my opinion and I was slightly disappointed. Despite them being made with way less technology and had to make do with what they had back in the 1980s, George Lucas did a pretty good job at depicting an exciting galactic adventure in episodes IV-VI. At the same time, it was interesting to see the prequel, understand the circumstances for what followed and see how George Lucas directed films closer to my time. Now I want to read the books to get even more in depth…but, I am still not done reading Game of Thrones and my second term in university is about to start. Woes of a student.

While I was Boxing Day shopping today, I was on the lookout for Star Wars merchandise, namely Star Wars posters with Han Solo and Princess Leia. Of course, I failed miserably and only managed to find some posters with either the entire ensemble of all the Star Wars characters (which was pretty cool, but I did not feel like getting it) or ones that focused on Yoda (who is also really cool, but again, not what I was looking for). I also wanted this:

But the chances of me randomly finding that in a Vancouver shopping mall was definitely really low, so I gave up the search before it started. Okay, that is a lie because I went to custom t-shirt places just to check, but my suspicions came true. I also found moleskine Star Wars notebooks, but that was kind of boring. I guess if I wanted any good Star Wars merchandise, I would have to go online. Which I promptly did when I went home and found these:

Lightsaber chopsticks! I am asian so we eat with chopsticks everyday anyway! WANT WANT WANT!

Ugh I cannot believe I am getting into Star Wars now. I feel so behind…Oh well, at least I found something to do over my holiday. šŸ™‚

And down the rabbit hole I go…

To say it’s only been a while is only going to bend the facts to make this whole thing look less bad! But honestly, I could not find time to breathe, much less write… but believe me, there were numerous times when I wanted to blog, but really couldn’t! It felt as though quizzes, homework, midterms, projects, etc. were just lining up in my life, demanded to be tended to one followed by another! I actually had to keep another blog for school, which wasn’t very fun since we had to blog on articles…

Frosh buddies and I on the last day of term =) Me, Benedicta, Amy ā¤

Anyways, let me just fill in the blanks. Some of you already know that I started my first year in university…and I guess today marks the first day I’m free from classes! I survived first term! However, this break I’m having right now is supposed to be studying for my finals, and God knows I’m looking forward to those. I decided I’m going to talk about what I learned in university, hoping it will help those of you going into it.

1) No more time!

One of the things I noticed most was the lack of time I was left with. As I said earlier, work just kept coming, and of course, not wanting to fail, I had to tackle them. I found it hard to balance seeing friends with seeing family, while getting my work done! The weekend flies by faster than ever, and it is during weekends when profs assign regular homework, usually due some day next week. So you end up doing homework during the weekends, or studying for some midterm.

2) Midterms
Oh yeah, talking about midterms…they don’t actually occur in the middle of your term. Honestly, I have had three midterms for a class, and averaging on two for most of my other ones. So really, it should be called a biweekly exam or something. =.=

3) Space out your classes!
One of my biggest mistakes was taking 6 courses in one term. I had to take a total of 10 this academic year, and somehow, I scheduled six into my first term at university. Of course, if you’re going into engineering or something, six is perfectly normal. But, when everyone around me was juggling five, I found it super hard to keep all my marks up for the six I was doing! So please, spread out your timetable! You, and your marks, will thank you for it! And also, I didn’t really have breaks between a majority of my classes, and it turns out that certain classes were really far away from each other. Oh well, I got to work out and run to my classes like a madwoman.

4) Your professors

Dear university teachers,Ā

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā I don’t call you ā€œprofessorā€ out of respect. I do it because it makes me feel like I’m in Harry Potter.

 Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  -Sincerely, University Student.
What you will learn real quick is that with 300 students to a class, your professor will not be there to baby you like your teachers did in high school. Didn’t do your homework? They really don’t care. At times, I wondered why I was paying them to only get a hour or so of plain talking, mostly about stuff I can read on my own…but you learn that that’s university. However, having said that, they usually have office hours when you can go visit them—whether they’re there or not is another matter. You really have to learn to fend for yourself and go seek for what other resources there are that can help you. At UBC, there’s free tutors and help, but don’t forget you also have friends who probably understood he material better than you! Oh and there’s TAs, but of course, as Professor Gateman kindly points out, TAs are only students, so teaching-wise, they’re not overly experienced.

5) Friends
You know when you’re feeling down, or just plain bad, and then you really start to see the people around you? I guess it’s not just in university that this happens, but for me, there was a period during my first term when I truly was depressed. There were some people who were there, some who didn’t, even if I really needed it. Of course, I’m not holding it against them or anything, because it is no one’s obligation, but for those who were there, you guys truly made life livable. Looking back, I still remember being depressed, and I hope I don’t go through it again. But again, make friends because then you can have someone to catch you up with stuff you missed in class, teach you material, or just plain be there for you to talk!

6) Commuting…Ohhh TransLink.
I guess commuting wasn’t that bad, especially since I get rides to school in the morning. But, when you really want to return home after a long day, the bus ride seems forever. I takes me around an hour to get home, and since I can’t really read or do anything productive on the bus, I just have to find some way to get through it. I’ve seen lots of people sleeping on the bus, and I have wanted to do it countless times. But I’ve always been too worried about missing my stop, so I end up just staying awake. I recommend you find something you can do on the bus, so that you’re not wasting time. For me, though I can’t read textbooks, I can read novels, or something that I really get into. I usually become so absorbed I don’t even realized I’m on the bus anymore. Then, I got a chance to escape and when I get home, I get down to work. Okay, I am not really that productive…but still, I get home and look back, I realize I did get a bit of time to relax on the bus.
If you want to avoid public transport, or money for gas, live on campus. But for me, it’s not really an option because I’d miss my family too much! And I feel like I’m already spending to little time with them. ☺

As you can see, I didn’t talk about how to study, but I believe that it depends on who you are. I have friends who study on campus, then return home when their work is done. I can only study in my room, which I learned in Psychology is bad. I need to study in a familiar environment or else I end up being low on productivity. But my studying habits have definitely changed from when I was in high school.

One last thing: Would I suggest buying a textbook?

I don’t like carrying my five hundred pound textbooks to school, especially when I’ll probably have to lug them around all day. (Well, I do have a locker, but the lack of breaks makes it impossible for me to retrieve stuff from it.) I really like my textbooks that come with an online version of the text, so I can simply read them on my MacBook. OH! And since we’re talking about MacBooks, it’s true that like 80% of the laptops I’ve seen in school are MacBooks.

Not my school, but you get the idea.

Anyway, back on topic, I like studying off an actual book more than off a screen. But, there are some courses where the textbook really is unnecessary. If you feel like you’ll be studying the book a lot and constantly referring back to it, get it. If not, you can always purchase a cheaper online version of it..or attain in through other means šŸ˜‰ Ā and then read it on an e-reader.

I hope I’ll be blogging again soon! The holidays are right around the corner, so I’ll have more time!
